Playwright

Douglas DuBrin’s history as a playwright is defined by an ongoing evolution from self-produced indie showcases into high-concept Off-Broadway festivals and regional staged readings. Writing primarily in the realms of thought-provoking dark comedy, psychological suspense, and speculative sci-fi, DuBrin initially built traction in the New York independent theater ecosystem. His early work found critical exposure through selections in recognized development platforms, most notably the Midtown International Theater Festival, which served as a launching pad for his character-driven dialogue and structured narrative style.

A major turning point in his playwriting history occurred when he co-founded Painted Pistachio Productions alongside creative partner Alison Zhang. This ensemble company gave DuBrin a dedicated platform to produce his experimental, sci-fi-infused one-act play, Intestinal Pulchritude. Exploring heavy thematic questions about human meaning and the swift rise of artificial intelligence, the play earned a coveted spot in the 2025 Chain One-Act Festival in New York City before expanding its reach regionally through a tour to IndyFringe in Indianapolis.

Today, DuBrin's history has transitioned into longer-form narrative structures and extensive regional development. He has solidified a major footprint in the New England theater circuit through a comprehensive, year-long residency contract at the Hole in the Wall Theater in Connecticut. This multi-play showcase highlights the sheer breadth of his portfolio, moving from full-length political and murder mysteries like Conduct Unbecoming and The AI Mystery to traditional dark comedies like It's Movie Night and his rapid-fire short-play compilation, 10 x 10.
